This section contains definitions of various terms used in the manual and Help file to help clarify information.

PSR = Periodontal Screening & Recording

A quick way to evaluate the overall periodontal health of a patient.

Mouth is divided into sextants and a value from 0-4 is given in each area depending on a sampling of a few probing depths in that sextant

0=health; 4=severe perio disease (i.e., pocket depth > 5.5 mm)

MGD = Muco Gingival Defect

A localized loss of the pink gingival tissue around a tooth

The pink gingival tissue is attached to bone whereas the red mucosal tissue is not. A tooth is not periodontally sound unless there is a good band of pink gingival tissue around the tooth.

An MGD cannot occur on the palate (all gingival tissue – no mucosal)

GM = Gingival Margin

A measurement of recession of the gingival tissues from a point on the tooth which would be considered normal

This measurement is not used much.
